Buy Me Some Truth Before You Buy Me Another Drink

by Lisa Zaran

We were having some sort of discussion
about, I can’t remember what, a conversation,
something light and sweet perhaps, to compliment
the champagne we were drinking.

Oh, now I remember.
You were saying how women,
in general, not all women, but most,
some! You corrected yourself,

were too caught up in their own selfish vanity
to notice the beauty that surrounds them
in their pigeonholed lives.

I think, wait, let me think now,
I believe I threw my drink in your face
and man, it was beautiful!
