Don’t Be Such a Victim
by Lisa Zaran
To be startled is one thing.
Dead frightened something else
entirely. As your attacker
looks on, you must pretend
not to be so afraid.
Though his weight is negotiable
you can bet the knife he’s holding
isn’t. Think of it from his side.
He must be able to outstrength
you, at the same time remove
your clothes while holding a blade
to your throat.
Do you think that’s easy?
The moment you cross that line
from startled to afraid,
he can sense it. You might make
him nervous and when attackers
get nervous their hands begin to shake.
Don’t forget about the knife
just try not to think about it
the entire time. If he hasn’t cut
yet, there’s still reason to believe.
A good chance you’ll come out alive.
