LAST DAYS of the CROSS by JOSEPH RIDGWELL
by Sean McGahey
Whilst I’m waiting for my copy of Ridgwell’s new book, I can’t help but wonder “…will this book be any good?” Is this another attempt by someone trying to be offbeat, neo-prophetic, voice of the common man and brutally satirical? Will the transition from online to print work? Reading Ridgwell’s work online works because it’s spontaneous, accessible and free! Now we have to pay!
Is Ridgwell becoming part of the establishment? Or dare I say it, is the establishment becoming more like Ridgwell?
The print scene is a vast and a dangerous sea of established and rather good writers, do we want to see the online urban hero of words swallowed up and spat out by the “print establishment?”
Watch this space…
I would like to claim that I (the beat) discovered Joseph “The Bomber” Ridgwell but you can’t really discover or unearth a writer or poet like Ridgwell: the un-tuned, brutal, outstanding raw quality is so fucking obvious Ridgwell was never going to write or live in obscurity for any length of time.
I’m halfway through “last days of the cross” it’s funny, dramatic and in places (I’m assuming) brutally honest…I want to say nothing has surpassed Ridgwell and blah blah blah if that was the case then this striking debut is destined to be a one hit wonder (Kenickie). We all know Ridgwell has another book up his sleeve or in his beer/piss stained back pocket…..
More next week…

I turned to Angel,
‘Still shagging salami?’
‘You’d better not let him hear you say that.’
I raised my eyebrows in disbelief,
‘What’s he ganna do, shoot me?’
Angel flicked some of her fringe away from her eyes and bit the bottom of her lower lip, like she always did when flirting,
‘Anyways, I only saw him couple of times, it was over weeks ago.’
‘Another notch on the bedpost of the sausage man,’ I mumbled.
Angel glared at me,
‘What did you say?’

Ridgwell rocks, Ridgwel writes like a tom tom drum, Ridgwell changed my life, he may well change yours. And he’s the best looking author in funky town.
