Losing the All-American Boy
by Sabrina Cognata
I love the all-american
Boy,
& I didn’t capitalize american on purpose.
As the all-american boy,
you look like
you grew up running in tall grass.
The sun kissing your skin
on sultry, summer days.
In the months without
winter.Winter, the enemy.
Never, ever expect me
to share in your Winter Wonderland lifestyle–
I cannot endure the freezing
cold.
For you or with you,
even if we spent it
together,
wrapped up
in heavy blankets.
Bodies entangled.
Two becoming one,
then two,
then one again.
Schitzophrenia.Let’s stay on the beach,
forever.
And I will run my
pseudo-american hands through
your all-american hair.
And wink
lying in the sand.
It ends up everywhere,
rummaging up my spine,
I moan softly in your
ear.
My body.
Your body.
Together.
I run my nails
down your back,
into your skin,
Onto your spine.
And wink,
one last time.
Then I am in the sand, again.
Alone.
Granules between my toes.
Inside my everything,
reminding me of our
nothing.
Fairy tales should end
like this.

Cool imagery. Well placed line breaks. Good pace.
I like it.
