More Beat-ings

by Renee

The Beat would like to welcome Renee K Nicholson on board as editor - you’ll be seeing more of her work and reviews on The Beat in the near future. We’ll leave it up to Renee to tell you more…

Hopefully you’ve read my review of Steve Almond’s Candy Freak, have gotten a copy and read it if you haven’t done so before, and are eagerly awaiting his newest book, The Evil B.B. Chow & Other Stories.

Reviewing is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to connect with the community of writers. It shapes your taste and preferences; it forces you to interact with work in a way that is meaningful and careful. And so stay tuned for more reviews here by me as well as other writers.

With National Poetry Month coming up in April in the US, I wanted to offer you some poets you might consider in your upcoming reading selections:

John Hoppenthaler, Lives of Water
Campbell McGrath, Florida Poems
Gerry LaFemina, The Window Facing Winter
Paula Closson Buck, The Acquiescent Villa
James Harms, The Joy Addict
Tony Hoagland, Donkey Gospel
Cate Marvin, World’s Tallest Disaster

Also, check out Tar River Poetry, edited by Peter Makuck – over 25 years of terrific poetry.

Curious about me? Well, not much to tell. I write a blog titled “Life with RA” about living with rheumatoid arthritis at http://www.healthdiaries.com where I’m a featured writer. This fall, I’m starting a Master of Fine Arts program at West Virginia University.

The Beat’s got creative work forthcoming from many talented writers and poets. So check back often and happy reading!
