Mud Villains
by Fenton Grant
Tumbleweeds,
Drenched, roll as bowling balls.
Crisp cotton bystanders,
Pins,
Fall straight.
Alpine Valley.
Shallow causes
Form deep battle cries.
And the tumbleweeds,
A mix of rain and alcohol,
Knock ‘em dead.
The music stirs
The testosterone soaked,
Modern day
Hippies.
Peace and love
Having proven futile,
Has given way
To hammering fists.
But the fists,
Seeped in mud,
Merely strike their owners
In the hope
Someone will notice.
Note: Mud Villains was written in reflection of the August, 2007 performance by Rage Against the Machine at Alpine Valley Music Center in Wisconsin.
