My Perfect Poem

by James McLaughlin

Would have to have a river in it
or a stream running down Ben Ailish or
colours, tastes that tang of rose
a précis of luscious adjectives
images that resemble the Golan Heights
chthonic connotations and rainbows
metaphors juiced with desire
things that don’t mean anything
nouns and verbs of intransitive
it would have to have the word redolent
it would have to have the word lemon
it would have to have the word oil glue bubble haze -
in part it would wander through forests
in part it would tell of the past
in part it would laugh and sing -
it would lie with me in the long grass
it would swoop at a crag
it would be all of Dali’s paintings
it would be the skyline of New York
it would be spirit and air together
it would have desire as simile
