Nightmares

by Sophie Jarman

One

That a bald headed man is decapitating me on a sidewalk.

That I am raping a girl in Converse.

That the girl in Converse is raping me.

That her hair is like cotton candy and her fingers are
barb wire.

That the world has turned as violet as my veins.

That I am run over by a Landrover.

Two

It is white.

The world is a dirty, dark, beautiful white…

Her skin is a dirty, dark beautiful white and it
rubs off on my limbs.

Her skin is cocaine.

Lips are like crushed jewels.  They remind me
of my ex girlfriend.

Everything reminds me of my ex-girlfriend.

That the Landrover smells like death. And goulash.

Three

I am in bed with my professor.

One night, two nights, and a whole chapter.

Of Proust.

Three orgasms that feel like A+’s.

Four and he fails me.

But I enjoy it all.

Four

That I am an alcoholic genius.

That my pores are huge like whales.

That he slashes my throat with a flip knife.

That she drinks my blood.

That my body is a corpse.

Five

That I am in love with him more than life itself.
