On being a non-crystalline solid

by Sarah Safraz

I am glass.
A thin film of transparency.
If left undisturbed I can maintain
my overall form and microstructure.
Shattering is not an option.
I am double-glazed.

Or so I thought, before you warmed this icy surface
with your hands, leaving tiny etchings
along hundreds of score lines.
Each etching a memory,
each score line a release.
Don’t worry. You can’t press too hard.
Shattering is not an option.
