Hey Zack, Thanks for the perceptive review! In spite of some political prejudice against reading about the lives of the rich -- it's simply not true to say there are no working class (and therefore intersting because 'real'?) characters in the book -- also the Harley Street psychiatrist you refer to is in fact an NHS shrink who works at the Maudsley, but these are quibbles -- I felt that you did 'get' the questing and subversive intent of my book even though it is unashamedly a thriller and designed to work first as a creepy, unnerving page-turner. If you consider the structure of the novel carefully you will see that it's not merely a slick, efficent suspense-and-jeopardy machine, but aspires to (well-disguised, I hope) higher things! This is my way. I'm afraid most 'serious' modern fiction doesn't cut it for me as such and belongs to a literary world that's more about hype and who you know than talent or engagement with the world we live in. PS. Thanks anyway for spotting that Home Before Dark is NOT about a serial killer! Read the book Steve!

Good review, Zack. Now, I like crime writing and thrillers; I even like the odd serial-killer novel. But there are more fictional serial killers than real ones - what is it about the serial killer that interests us? Strange that the "spree killer" is not as attractive to authors, although, when he is, the fiction is very good - Christopher Priest, Peter Sotos... I think I'l be sticking to the daddies of the genre (that sounds weird) - Derek Raymond, Ken Bruen, David Peace, John Williams, James Ellroy, Walter Mosley, James Sallis, and Elmore Leonard. Cheers.
