Yeah, it must have been great talking to Kelman - his interviews are always interesting and I like his essays too. Must say, his last couple of books aren't to my taste either - the one set in America was pretty boring and Translated Accounts (I think it's called was too ambitious). I prefer the grit of the earlier stuff. But as for people 'losing it' along the way, I have to disagree. I've just finished a fairly recent book by Joyce Carol Oates (who's been writing for a lifetime) and her writing was passionate and brilliant. As for Niall Griffiths, he is relatively recent and he always sets his books around Liverpool/Wales. In fact I've only read one of his but he seemed pretty good.

never heard of him. is he recent? wrote my dissertation on kelman in 1991/2. met him up in glasgow and a chat to him for a couple of hours. great man. his work is just a pastiche now, like a lot of people who get old. I reckon after your first 2 books it's all over for you.

Thanks for reading it. The character in Money Power Respect is not as messed-up and angry as the one in the Tottenham story - there's more of a pathos to Punchy's life so I reflected it with a slightly comical touch. But yes, "unapologetic" - that's a good word to describe what I only wish there was more of in current fiction. Blandness is the enemy.

yes, i read that too and thought it was very good. however I think michael should make his language more savage. the character is too restrained. the more unapologetic the better.
